“The works I make are written in images; they write the space to create within, I use drawing as a tool to think visually. I am engaged with the way lines to behave, where they come from, how they remind me of the thinking/feeling process in all its organised and messy ways. Hair lines, exact or ambiguous, became a segue to self and other, my passport to the thinking line, to the feeling space and the texture that is drawing.
A drawer first and foremost, I draw with any material. While engaged with the delicate line I am executing on a surface, I am equally fascinated by the shade and depth they create. While they are visual I see my completed works as hiding a moment yet exposing a space; being private but publicly exposing an intimacy. My specificity is a nod to the masters, my composition is a new lens on the mind, my subject matter metaphor only.
‘Primarily using ‘drawing’ as the first tool to articulate, Jo is constantly driven by notions of ambiguity or duality. She uses representational style to convey abstract ideas and is continually absorbed by the confluence of private and public, order and chaos, thought and matter…..’
